International Atomic Energy Agency

The IAEA is an international organization that works for the safe, secure and peaceful uses of nuclear science and technology. It developed from US President Eisenhower's Atoms for Peace address to the General Assembly of the United Nations in December 1953 as its ideas shaped the IAEA Statute. The organization was created in 1957 (in response to the deep fears and expectations resulting from the discovery of nuclear energy) and is headquartered in Vienna, Austria, while its regional/liaison offices are located in Toronto, Tokyo, New York and Geneva and two research laboratories in Seibersdorf, Austria and Monaco. The main work areas of IAEA cover the areas of „Nuclear Technology & Applications“, „ Nuclear Safety & Security“ and „ Safeguards & Verification“. The work of Nuclear Technology & Applications involves helping countries use nuclear and isotopic techniques for a sustainable development in agriculture, human health, water resource management, marine environment and industrial applications. The work of Nuclear Safety & Security is being carried out to provide a strong, sustainable global nuclear safety and security framework. The work of Safeguards & Verification is being carried out to fulfil the duties and responsibilities of the IAEA as the world’s nuclear inspectorate, performing an indispensable role in global efforts to stop the spread of nuclear weapons. Current thematic work areas focus on Radioactive Waste Management, the IAEA action plan on Nuclear Safety, Cancer Care and Control, Nuclear Power and the Fukushima Nuclear Accident for instance.
