The main objective of the Convention on Supplementary Compensation for Nuclear damage is an increase of the funds that could be made available if a case of nuclear damage occurs. State Parties are obliged to ensure that they have no less than 300 million special drawing rights, a unit of currency defined by the IMF, dedicated for use in the event of a nuclear accident. This compensation must be distributed equally to all parties affected, no matter their nationality or place of residence. Such compensation must be paid if the damage is caused within either the territory of the State Party or within or above their territorial seas. Additionally, State Parties are also liable if nuclear damage is caused by ship bearing the flag of the State Party or by an aircraft registered to the country in question. The convention finally prescribes a series of rules concerning its relationship with the Vienna Convention and the Paris Convention on Third Party Liability Rights.
